Coming up to the elections in Palau in November there is a rising tide of criticism over the marine protected area that's previously been considered a great national achievement.

The Palau National Marine Sanctuary has been celebrated as one of the world's most ambitious ocean conservation initiatives.

Known in Palau as a bul, it was designed to protect Palau's inshore fish stocks and to help ensure the sustainability of tuna in the Pacific.

Covid-19 impact on children lifelong: UNICEF report

The United Nations Children's Fund is warning the impact of Covid-19 on children extends far beyond the spheres of their physical health.

A new report released by the UN agency revealed the pandemic was having profound effects on children's mental health, social development, safety, privacy, economic security and beyond.

The report Humanitarian Action For Children also said the impact of the global crisis on children would be lifelong.

Students stay home in Fiji because of water woes

Tens of thousands of students in Fiji have been kept at home this week due to the escalating water crisis in the country.

The Water Authority said an automatic transfer switch that ran raw water pumps to the Waila Water Treatment Plant burnt out and caused all five pumps to switch off.

New king crowned on Mangaia in the Cooks

The island of Mangaia in the Cook Islands came to a standstill yesterday for the coronation of its new king.

Tangi Tereapii was installed Numangatini Ariki at a packed ceremony and feast at Te Maruata-Nui-o-Numangatini Marae.

The Cook Islands News reports the celebration was attended by the whole island, as well as dignitaries from Rarotonga, Aitutaki and Atiu.

France accused of being partial as New Caledonia independence vote nears

28 Aug 2020

New Caledonia's UNI pro-independence party alleges the French state fails to be impartial in the lead-up to the October referendum on independence.

Its leader Louis Mapou said with just over a month to go until the vote, the top French administrative court is yet to rule on the use of the French flag in the referendum campaign.

Mapou said in a statement that the court had not replied to his side's challenge.
