Nauru announces more details on shipping service

The newly set up Nauru Shipping Line has revealed its main focus will be chartering a single vessel, Kiwai Chief, to carry freight between Suva and Nauru.

It was announced last month that the company was being established by the Nauru Maritime Service, with funding from the government.

Spokesperson Adalane Ika says the Suva service will allow for transshipment of cargo from Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Fiji.

The Cook Islands tightens borders over NZ Covid cases

The Cook Islands has tightened its borders after the confirmation of new coronavirus cases in New Zealand.
 

People arriving on Friday's flight from Auckland will have to be tested before they leave, and will go straight into supervised quarantine when they arrive in Rarotonga.

The Cabinet met this morning to discuss the new cases in New Zealand and the steps that would be taken to protect the Cook Islands.

Solomons receives medical supplies for pandemic response

Solomon Islands has received the first batch in a series of medical supplies from abroad to help it prepare for a Covid-19 outbreak.

The personal protective equipment and other medical supplies were financed by the Asian Development Bank and procured by the United Nations Children's Fund.

The supplies, including masks, thermometers, face-shields, gowns and testing kits will help frontline medical workers respond to a potential outbreak of the virus.

Cook Islands bubble could be open by end of year - NZ PM

New Zealand's prime minister says a travel bubble with the Cook Islands could be open before the end of the year, but has refused to be drawn to a firm timeline.

Cabinet this morning considered a draft text of an agreement being worked on by both governments.

Jacinda Ardern said she hoped officials would be able to start work on the ground in both countries to prepare for quarantine-free travel.

Floods strike Cook Islands' Rarotonga

08 Aug 2020

About five Cook Islands families were driven from their homes by flooding this week, during a downpour that brought a month's worth of rain to Rarotonga.

The Metservice measured 121 mm of rain during the deluge on Wednesday night, six more than the island's monthly average.

Inspector John Strickland from the Cook Islands police said flood waters over a metre deep were recorded in residential areas close to the islands main town, Avarua.

Flying Fijians coach keeping close eye on local talent

While the prospect of international rugby remains up in the air, Flying Fijians coach Vern Cotter is taking a closer look at locally based talent.

The former Scotland head coach was unveiled as the new Fiji mentor in January but has yet to step foot in the country because of Covid-19.

He's currently back home in New Zealand, where Fiji's Skipper Cup domestic competition is being screened on TV.
