Pacific cities getting $US900 million revamp

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and its partners are set to spend $US900 million on improving Pacific towns and cities by the end of 2022.

The ADB's Pacific Urban Update 2020 report details a swathe of urban infrastructure projects that are planned or under way across the region.

ADB Pacific urban division director Jingmin Huang said the report showed how the bank was partnering with island governments, private sector and donor partners.


American Samoa to extend suspension of Hawaii flights

American Samoa's governor has ordered flights between Pago Pago and Hawaii be suspended until September.

The last Hawaiian Airlines flight in and out of Pago Pago was in March, as the territory shut down because of coronavirus concerns.

That flight ban was due to be lifted at the end of the month, but with Covid-19 resurgent in Hawaii, Lolo Matalasi Moliga has extended the suspension.


Pacific foreign ministers stress need to work together

The foreign ministers of the Pacific Islands Forum countries are calling for the member states to work together to overcome Covid-19.

They have issued a joint statement, saying that the pandemic poses unique challenges for the Pacific.

The island geography, the limited medical infrastructure, and communal ways of Pacific life, mean even one case of Covid-19, in any country, represents a major threat.


Four new covid-19 cases in PNG are lab staff

Four new confirmed covid-19 cases in Papua New Guinea come from staff in the main labatory that tests for the virus.

The country's Health Secretary, Dr Paison Dakulala, announced the cases in PNG's capital, taking the total confirmed cases in PNG so far to fifteen.

The Post Courier reports that all four cases are staff members at the Central Public Health Laboratory at Port Moresby General Hospital.


Samoa govt looking to ban Facebook

The Samoan government is looking seriously at banning Facebook in the country.

TV1Samoa reports Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi saying this week that many people had complained about the popular social media platform and how it is being used to hurt people.

"I am thinking about this a lot especially how it is being used to make defamatory statements about others," he said.


Former Niue premier Sir Toke Talagi dies after lengthy illness

Sir Toke Talagi, the former long time leader of Niue, has died.  The four-term premier has been ailing for the past few years, to the point where much of his last year as premier was spent in New Zealand for medical treatment.
