French soldier tests positive for Covid-19 in New Caledonia

New Caledonia has detected another Covid-19 case.

The French High Commission in Noumea said the individual tested positive at the end of the quarantine in the quarters set aside for the military.

It said it compliance with the provisions in New Caledonia, the person has been transferred to the Covid-19 unit at the hospital although he is asymptomatic.

A further test is expected to be done today.

Pacific bubble: Flights between Cook Islands and NZ to be confirmed next week

The Cook Islands government expects to confirm a "travel bridge" with New Zealand in the next week.

The concept would allow people to travel between the two countries freely, and follows a meeting between Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her counterpart Henry Puna last night.

Cook Islands Deputy Prime Minister Mark Brown says there's a desperate need for tourism in the country.

PNG domestic violence laws need effect in villages

A senior researcher in Papua New Guinea has emphasised that government moves to deter domestic violence need to be effective at a provincial and village level.

The government this month introduced harsher penalties for gender-based and sorcery accusation-related, following the recent violent death of 19-year-old mother Jenelyn Kennedy.

NZ Pacific Language Weeks now include Kiribati

New Zealand's Minister for Pacific Peoples, Aupito William Sio, said he is pleased to add the Kiribati language to this country's Pacific language weeks programme.

He said the government is strongly committed to growing and supporting the Pacific language weeks, and with $NZ20 million in funding his ministry has been able to include funding support to the Kiribati and Rotuman communities this year.

Five more Covid-19 cases are confirmed in Fiji

Five new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Fiji, all of them in border quarantine.

They include a 44-year-old man, a 38-year-old woman, a 51-year-old man, a 29-year-old woman and a 47-year-old man.

The acting permanent secretary of health, James Fong, said one of them is the husband of one of the three patients confirmed earlier this week.

He said all eight cases were caught in border quarantine and there's no threat to the community.

ChildFund, NZ govt target Pacific youth well-being

The charity ChildFund has gone into partnership with the New Zealand government to improve well-being in the Asia Pacific region.

The $US7.3 million 'Impact programme,' to which New Zealand's foreign ministry will contribute about $US5.6 million, targets children, youth and their families in

Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Solomon Islands over the next five years.
